October 5th, 2011 West Erie County, DWCO Randy Leighton, rglerie@msn.com Conditions: Significant rainfall over the past week has kept the tribs high and flowing with muddy conditions at times. The days of steady rain this past weekend had the tribs high and flowing hard, but not blown out, with fish on the move up strean as far as route 20 but not in great numbers yet. Catches were tough given the conditions but as the water levels subsided we saw see an influx of many more steelhead. Angler catches off the wall at Walnut Creek were frequent. Fish Perching has been good on the lake when calm enough. Smart perch anglers know that as long as the wind and wave conditions are calm, perch fishing on Lake Erie can last well into the Fall months. Perch are still schooling in 60 to 62 feet of water north of the point on Presque isle. Many bass anglers have been working Presque Isle Bay with fair to good success. Current Lake Erie water temperatures is still relatively warm at 64 degrees off Erie. Current West County trib conditions as of this writing are good with some remaining color from recent rains and decent flow. Fishing the Wall at the Walnut Creek Access: Anglers are again advised when fishing the Wall along the channel at the Walnut Creek Access, boaters coming in and out of the channel have the absolute right of way over angler's lines. Anger's are required to yield to the boaters by completing pulling their lines out of the water as the boats pass to avoid tangles in the boater's lower units and out drives. Anglers not yielding their line are subject to citation. Tangled lines can destroy out drive seals and in some cases cause thousands of dollars in damages. An angler causing such damage to a boaters outdrive can also be exposed to the cost of repairs. It should be considered that the Walnut Creek Marina Channel was designed as a pathway for boaters in and out of the Marina. The fishing opportunities along the Wall were a bi product of the original design. Although not a law, boaters exiting the channel are asked to sound there horns to alert anglers that a boat is coming through the channel. Night Fishing Tips: Night fishing along the Lake Shore or along the tribs in areas that permit night fishing, can be highly productive and a lot of fun. Here are a few suggestions: 1) A good lantern with a shield on the streamside will provide all the light needed and minimize spooking the fish.
3) Baits should be fished on the bottom taking advantage of any available drift 4) Lighted floats to detect strikes can be helpful. 5) Heavier lines of up to 8 # test can be used at night. 6) Glow in the dark Cleos can be deadly when casting from shore into the lake. 7) Dress warm, pack a snack and hot drink and your favorite folding chair and be sure to clean up your area when Support Your Local Sportsmen's Clubs: Local Weather: Wednesday Night...Clear.
