Conditions:
The heavy rains from last week raised the trib levels and brought a significant number of steelhead in, however, as dry as conditions have been, it didn't take long for water levels to drop back to near the pre rain levels. Moderate precipitation this week should be helpful. Crowds were heavy this past weekend with the arrival of the rain. Catch rates were moderate to good. There are good numbers of fish in the tribs. The Trout Run nursery waters are loaded with fish and are often a good indication as to the number of fish running in the tribs. Anglers have been out in force trolling the shorelines off the mouths of Walnut, and Trout and Godfrey runs. Catch rates have been fair to good. Fish have been mainly confined to the larger holes up stream and the access areas near the mouth. Lake shore fishing at Trout and Godfrey Runs has been good although we have seen pretty rough conditions over the last week.
Bass anglers have been having some success on Presque Isle Bay when the weather cooperates.
Lake Erie water temperature as of this writing is 59 degrees The West Erie County tribs are dropping with some color and flow as of this writing.
Law Enforcement: Anglers should be aware that an accidental foul hooking necessitates immediately releasing the fish unharmed. This means playing the fish no more than necessary (or cutting it loose if need be for it's survival) and if possible removing the hook while the fish is still in the water. So often we see an angler reel in a foul hooked fish, net it, toss it on the bank, admire it, show it to his buddies, and in some cases, of all things he will the time to take a photo. After all this, he will release it thinking he did the right thing only to have the fish float belly up down stream. It is important to remember that regulations state "catch, kill or possess". Taking possession of a foul hooked fish obviously would be a violation but equally so, not immediately releasing the same fish unharmed and causing a kill through careless over handling would be equally in violation. Stop Signs and Traffic Flow At The Walnut Creek Access The stop signs at Walnut Creek Access mean what they say . . STOP!! With the increase foot traffic between the parking area and Walnut Creek . . . it is more important than ever to obey these signs at the entrance to the access area. The most often heard excuse is that the driver was looking over the bank at the creek and never saw the sign. That means they wouldn't have seen the child that ran to the car for something or the husband & wife out for a stroll, or the neighboring landowner walking their dog. The stop sign at the entrance to the Walnut Creek parking area has been dramatically increased in size (nearly 4' in diameter) and can actually be seen as far away as Manchester road...there really is no excuse for not stopping. Anglers that have not been here since last year are advised to follow the new traffic flow patterns and additional signage.
