February 24th, 2010

West Erie County, DWCO Randy Leighton
(There will be no DWCO Report for March 6th and 16th, Reports will resume on March 23rd)

Conditions:

Temperatures have been hovering just above the freezing mark and combined with some rain earlier this week, the area has seen some melting. There has been some water opening up on the west side tribs but for the most part most areas are still ice covered. Presque Isle bay still has plenty of hardwater anglers but in these gradual melt down periods, extreme caution should be used. Anglers were having a tough time this past weekend with catches being hit or miss depending on location and who you talk to. Conditions permitting, the most productive area on the Bay seems to be North of Liberty Park and North of Dobbins Landing. Anglers were having some luck at the mouth of Trout Run and only a few scattered anglers have been spotted on the Marina basin at the Walnut Creek Access Area. Local forecasts all calling for significant snow over the next week. Anglers making long trips to the area would be wise to check forecasts and road conditions. Pennsylvania road conditions can be obtained by calling (888) 783 6783

Anglers Fishing the Shoreline at Trout Run:
With ice formed along the lake shore and the tributary open, it can be difficult to tell where the tributary ends and the lake begins. Fishing in the Trout Run trib (State controlled nursery waters) is prohibited. Generally any running or riffled water can be considered part of the tributary. If in doubt, don/t take the risk as fines for fishing or disturbing State nursery waters can be expensive.
