West Erie County, DWCO Randy Leighton, WCO Brook Tolbert

Conditions:

Hot and humid conditions have finally our area, at least for the time being, with the long awaited dog days of summer upon us. Walleye fishing has finally picked u and is fair to good in the deeper waters of the lake. 75 feet plus North of point on Presque Isle out to the Canadian line has been productive for both walleye and Steelhead. North of Walnut Creek to the second trench and west to the Ohio line has been producing as well. You do have to find them. Perch fishing is still hot with many limits brought in with a good number of jumbos in the mix. Anglers having the best success are on the move, not resting in an unproductive spot for any lengthy time.

Questions are already coming in regarding any Steelhead movement in the tribes. There has been little to no real activity yet, although there have been a few optimistic anglers trying there luck at night and day break of the Walnut Creek channel wall.

Bass action is still hot around Presque Isle and the Bay. Unless you are using live baits, weedless presentations are almost a must anywhere in and around the Bay.

Lake Erie water temperature off Erie is 75 degrees.

Congestions at the Walnut Creek Access:
With perch fishing at its peak and good fishing expected for a while, the Walnut Creek Access area has been been getting crowded. The new traffic pattern and the "break in period" seems to have past with little to no flow problems. This past weekend saw parking conditions and boat traffic akin to the coho days years ago. The key is patience and a little common sense. Officers are tolerant to a little creative parking when conditions warrant so, however there are a few areas where parking is unacceptable. Do not park in any area that would block a building entrance or access, any place that would block right of way or another vehicle and in any handicapped spot without proper license or permit. Parking anywhere along the north bank (just above the beach) is not permitted as much of this area is "dredge fill" and can be unstable. Parking on the Sunset Memorial Garden island is not permitted. Always be sure there is all asphalt areas are full before considering parking on any grass area and if there is any doubt as to permitted parking areas ask an officer or office personnel.

Try Edinboro Lake:
Located south of Erie in Edinboro, this 245 acre lake can be a great afternoon getaway and offers a variety of great angling opportunities. The lake offers two free boat launch ramps with public parking, a fishing pier designed specifically for persons with disabilities, and a major playground complex for the youngsters.
The lake is unlimited horsepower rated, allowing water skiing and the use of personal watercraft. Fishing Edinboro Lake can be a real smorgasbord, with the local species including large and smallmouth bass, muskie, pan fish, and walleye. A section of trout stream water below the Edinboro dam is designated fishing for 12 year olds and under, as well as handicapped individuals. The Borough has public dock spaces available, which can be rented on a daily, weekly, or annual basis.

Boating Tip of the Week: Carry spare dock lines and fenders on your boat and be prepared to launch from either your port or starboard side. Also, use the "get ready" are for just that. When you pull up to the launch ramp all that should be left to do is unhook the bow and launch. This helps to keep launch ramp traffic moving.
