January 7th, 2009 West Erie County, DWCO Randy Leighton, WCO Brook Tolbert Conditions: Erie has enjoyed a break from snow and rain allowing the tribs to subside significantly. Day and night temperatures have made slushy conditions especially in the morning hours ice forming in the slow shallow pools. Most areas remain open, although the fish have scattered and continue move into the upper stretches. There is still reasonable flow although conditions are clear. This past weekend conditions were crowded at both the Walnut and Elk Creek Accesses. The Erie area has had well over 60" of snow so far this winter helping to keep the tribs at over all good levels. Forecasts are calling for night time temps dipping into the teens and perhaps the beginning of freeze over. Of course this help the hard water fishing season. Anglers are still pulling fish from the Walnut Creek Basin between freeze overs and the Manchester Hole is still loaded. Anglers targeting the lake shore at Trout and Godfrey Runs are doing fair, conditions permitting. WCO Jim Smolko reports that the East side trips are holding good numbers of fish. Law Enforcement: Officers remain busy with a variety of violations. Over the limit, license violations, lack of Lake Erie Permits, litter, possession of foul hooked fish and litter have been been common over the last few weeks. Patrols as always will continue through out the winter months. Support Your Local Sportsmen's Clubs: The Pennsylvania Steelhead Association will be holding their monthly meeting on Wednesday January 14th at the American Legion Post on West 12th street (route 5 near the Airport) at 7:00 PM. The public is welcome. Winter Trib Tips: 1) Frozen water and shorelines are best negotiated with ice cleats or felt soled wading boots. The rubber lug boots can be very slippery. 2) Frozen lines and eyelet's can really be annoying. Try a little lip balm or petroleum jelly on your rod eyelet's to prevent freezing. A little silicone sprayed on the line spool can slow down ice build up on your line. 3) Loose layered clothing will do best to keep you warm. Pocket hand warmers can make the day more enjoyable as well, 4) There are many types of glove options available from neoprene diving gloves to mittens. I prefer the "fingerless" rag wool gloves. Wool will retain its insulating 5) Taking frequent breaks to snack or just warm up and walking will help to keep circulation moving. 6) Keep your catch in the water to keep it from freezing. Tossing the fish on the bank in freezing weather will take the meat from cold to frozen adversely affecting 7) In the extreme winter weather, its a good idea to let someone know where you expect to fish and how long you expect to be gone. 8) Avoid getting your reel wet. Water and ice will ruin the effect of your drag system. 9) Keep eggs and minnows from freezing. Keeping containers of eggs in yourpocket will help and keeping minnow buckets in the water will help keep the bucket water from freezing. 10) Avoid alcohol as it does little to keep you warm and can impair good judgment in poor weather and ice conditions.
