West Erie County, DWCO Randy Leighton, WCO Brook Tolbert

Conditions:
Perch seem to have settled in to 50 to 52' of water north of Walnut Creek. Most are running an 10 to 12" range with limits being caught regularly. Good schools have been also observed Northwest of Seagull point on Presque Isle. Walleye have been elusive from day to day. One day will have limits coming in and the next day they will be gone with only a few per boat. Just when you think that you have them figured out using the purple & black or chartreuse worm harnesses, the only boat that comes in with fish used plugs off his the planer boards. It seems the best method changes from day to day. The area where the PA, Ohio and Canadian lines meet, or the "Triangle" as it is called has been productive. If you are going to fish this area be sure you know the boundaries. Current Lake Erie water temperature off Toledo is 71 degrees, off 71 Cleveland degrees, and off the Port of Erie, 70 degrees.
Congestion at the Walnut Creek Access:
With perch and walleye fishing at its peak and good fishing expected for a while, the Walnut Creek Access area has been on overload to put it mildly. This past week end saw parking conditions and boat traffic testing the patience of many folks. The key is patience and a little common sense and courtesy. Officers are tolerant to a little creative parking when conditions warrant so, however there are a few areas where parking is unacceptable. Do not park in any area that would block a building entrance or access, any place that would block right of way or another vehicle and in any handicapped spot without proper license or permit. Parking anywhere along the north bank (just above the beach) is not permitted as much of this area is "dredge fill" and can be unstable. Parking on the Sunset Memorial Garden island is not permitted. Always be sure that all asphalt areas are full before considering parking on any grass area and if there is any doubt as to permitted parking areas ask an officer or office personnel.

On a side note, I was doing a little traffic directing on Sunday morning at the Walnut access in an attempt to ease congestion when I heard "Excuse me officer, I have a question" I turned and gentleman was backing his 16' aluminum boat down the ramp. I asked him what I could do for him and he asked me with a straight face, "How do we get to Lake Erie from here?" After a few seconds of thinking of all the great comeback lines, I simply told him to go straight through the Marina and turn right.....you can't miss it. RL
