WEST ERIE COUNTY, DWCO Randy Leighton, WCO Brook Tolbert

Conditions:

Walnut Creek Channel and Basin Are Taking Time to Clear

Very little precipitation has left the tribs very low and clear with few remaining steelhead and plenty of suckers. Those with that late season steelhead itch will still find scattered fish on upper Elk in the I-90 area, in the Mckean Hole off I-79 and in the deeper areas near the mouth of Elk Creek. Anglers have been targeting spring Crappie with moderate success on along the South side of Presque Isle State Park. A variety of jigs are popular for shoreline crappie fishing, but generally you can't beat a live shiner under a float. Patient anglers have been doing well with the stockies at the Upper Gravel Pit pond in Fairview. Current Lake Erie water temperatures are forty degrees off Toledo, 37 degrees off Cleveland and 36 degrees off Erie.

Presque Isle Bay Public Advisory Committee Meeting:
A meeting of the Presque Isle Bay Public Advisory Committee will be held on April 24th at 6:30. The location is the Erie County Conservation District Headwaters Park, 1927 Wager Road (Wager road intersects route 8 just north of Interstate 90 in Erie). The meeting will focus on the Status of Fish Tumor Research, contaminated sediment in the harbor, and pollution impacts to the Bay from the watershed including the city of Erie. The public is welcome. For more information contact Dick Kubiak at (814) 899-9676

Elk Valley Sportsmen's Club Kids Fishing Derby
The Elk Valley Sportsmen's Association will be holding its annual fishing derby for kids 12 and under at the Girard Boro Park pond on Saturday, April 29th. Kickoff is at 1:00 PM till 3:00 PM with great prizes and refreshments for the kids. This is a terrific event for the kids (and great entertainment for the parents) and is always well attended. This is a great introduction to fishing for the youngsters. Get there early for that "hot spot". Any child 12 years of age or younger is welcome to join in the fun. Fishing gear and help is available for those kids in need. Club members and PFBC officers are always on hand to help out. (Hint: shiners or meal worms are generally the best bait)

Local Regulations Regarding The Big Opener:
Anglers should be aware of local regulations regarding the up coming regular season Trout opener.

The Upper Gravel Pit Pond, Lake Pleasant, and the East and West Basin Ponds at Presque Isle State Park have been open and part of the Early Season Trout Stocked Waters Program. These waters will be closed to fishing from April 1st until 8:00 AM, April 15th, the opening of regular trout season.

It is unlawful to fish or possess trout or salmon in or along any Lake Erie tributary stream or the East and West Basin Ponds (Waterworks Ponds, Presque Isle State Park) from 12:01 AM on April 14th until 8:00 AM on April 15th, a period of 32 hours
All anglers fishing Pennsylvania waters of Lake Erie, Presque Isle Bay, and their tributaries are required to possess a valid Lake Erie permit.

The main tributaries where a permit is required are: Cascade Creek, Crooked Creek, Eight mile Creek, Elk Creek, Four mile Creek, Mill Creek, Raccoon Creek, Seven mile Creek, Six mile Creek, Sixteenmile Creek, Twelve mile Creek, Twenty mile Creek, and Walnut Creek.

Conneaut Creek, although partially in the Commonwealth, does actually enter into Lake Erie within the border of the state of Ohio. Therefore, anglers are not required to possess a Lake Erie Permit.

Anglers fishing the East and West Basin ponds (Waterworks Ponds, Presque Isle State Park) are not required to possess a Lake Erie Permit.

Anglers fishing inland ponds, lakes and reservoirs in Erie County are not required to possess a Lake Erie Permit.

In many cases an angler may need both a trout/salmon permit and a Lake Erie permit to fish in waters in the Erie area. Rather than purchasing these individually, a Combination Trout-Salmon/Lake Erie permit may be purchased.
