WEST ERIE COUNTY, DWCO Randy Leighton, WCO Brook Tolbert

Conditions:

Mild weather continues to provide a bonus season bonanza for area steelhead anglers with area hardwater anglers wondering if they will every get a chance to walk on the water this season. An adequate amount of drizzle and light snow has kept area tribs at good levels and flowing well in most areas with only occasional slush in the early morning hours. Fresh fish have been moving in and out of the tribs with fish thinned out from the access areas to the upper most stretches. Minnows skein, and single eggs, popular spring time baits have been hot around the area. Sucker spawn patterns and the minnow imitating micro jigs have also been good choices for the artificial bait folks. The Commission has been releasing spawned out steelhead in the Walnut Creek basin over the winter with several hundred recently release. The marina has been a popular area and with the mild weather has makes a great place to take the youngsters for their first steelhead. The Walnut Creek basin is also handicap accessible. Anglers were lined up along the lake shore this past weekend at Trout run having moderate success. Upper Elk near the Legion Park and Crooked Creek have both been very productive lately. Crowds have been on the light side for our area leaving plenty of room to try out that new flyrod and reel.

Important Meeting:
As we so often do we suggest that you support your local sportsmen's club, no matter where you may reside. Often these clubs provide the voice for many on important issues for the sportsman and can be the educational outlet on the latest issues. The Pennsylvania Steelhead Association will have its next meeting on Wednesday February 8th, starting at 7:00PM. Meetings are held in the main banquet room on the ground floor the American Legion Post 773 at 4109 West 12th Street, Erie, PA. 16505. This is on the south side of West 12th street (route 5), just east of the Erie Airport. Food and legal beverages are offered at reasonable prices.

This month the PSA welcomes Tom Ford, Chief of Staff for Policy and Planning for the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission. Mr. Ford will be discussing land easements, public access, and PFBC funding and development for the Erie area. With precious public access issues being a front burner issue in the Erie angling area, attending this meeting is your chance to show your support and concern over these relevant topics. Get involved.
