With a long dry spell, the tribs are low and very clear with much of the area anglers beginning to concentrate their efforts towards the bay and even the Lake. With the tribs well stocked with brownies to mix in with the remaining steelhead, and the spawning bass and suckers, there will be plenty of good angling opportunities along the tribs for the next few weeks. Normally, steelhead season is pretty much at an end this time of year, but with the late season snow and run off and cool nights, a fair number are still dotted throughout the tribs. Crappie fishing has fair to good in Presque Isle Bay. Bass boats have been abundant on the bay with anglers targeting that trophy bass. The recent nice weather has brought anglers out along the North and South piers with a few perch and bass being caught. Good pan fishing can be found along the bay front in and around all of the public access areas. Lake Erie water temperature off Erie is 40 degrees. Erie tributaries are low and clear as of this writing. Regular Trout Season Opens Around the Area:
Saturday's Trout opener brought crowds of anglers to the area to enjoy the pristine tributary scenery and to enjoy the many stocked ponds and lakes around the area. Families and kids crowded the hot spots, many taking part in annual tradition and some starting future traditions that will last for years to come. Angler and landowner problems were few and the day was truly filled with fun and excitement for many youngsters (Moms and Dads too) The crisp cool weather and bright sunshine seem to trigger good fishing with many limits observed especially at the Fairview Gravel Pit Pond and along upper Elk Creek. There are still plenty of stockies left to be caught and more to be stocked. Best success around the area seemed to be live emerald shiners and grubs. Hot Tip, Area Stocking Update:
Upper Elk Creek is scheduled for stocking on Wednesday morning April 20th.
All of Elk and Crooked creeks will be stocked on Tuesday morning April 26th. Elk Valley Sportsmen's Club Kids Fishing Derby
The Elk Valley Sportsmen's Association will be holding its annual fishing derby for kids 12 and under at the Girard Boro Park pond on Saturday, May 7th Kickoff is at 1:00 PM till 3:00 PM with great prizes and refreshments for the kids. This is a terrific event for the kids (and great entertainment for the parents) and is always well attended. This is a great introduction to fishing for the youngsters. Get there early for that "hot spot". Fishing gear and help is available for those kids in need. Club members and PFBC officers are always on hand to help out. (Hint: shiners are generally the best bait) Reminder: 2005 Great Pennsylvania Cleanup This Saturday
April 23rd will be the day of the 2005 Great Pennsylvania Clean Up. Many Erie area clubs are helping to support this event. Of particular interest to local anglers is the clean up effort sponsored by the Pennsylvania Steelhead Association. The Association will be holding their annual cleanup drive to coincide with the statewide event. Timing is perfect following a crowded opening week of regular Trout Season. Their efforts will concentrate on litter collection along the area tributaries, an effort that will not only contribute to the beautification of the area but will go along way in promoting good land owner relations and future public access. The meeting places will be Walnut Creek Office and Poor Richard's East for those interested in concentrating on the tributary streams. Bags, gloves and containers will be provided. Those interested in helping out are asked to meet at either of these two locations by 10:00 am, Saturday, April 23rd. What a great opportunity to be part of the solution. Local Weather:
