WEST ERIE COUNTY, DWCO Randy Leighton, WCO Brook Tolbert

Conditions:
Walleye anglers are doing well in a number of areas. 25 to 35 feet of water between Trout and Godfrey Runs and along the first trench Northwest of Walnut Creek in 62-68' of water have both been highly productive. Deeper diving dipseys and crawler harnesses in watermelon, blueberry muffin, chartreuse, and purple are hot right now.

Steelhead are hitting well in the deeper waters of the second trench northwest of Walnut Creek and in 60 to 65' of water off the point at Presque Isle. Michigan Stinger spoons are presently the rage.

Perch fish continues to thrive in 50 to 62' of water north and west of Walnut Creek with no end in sight.

There has been a lot of speculation as to when the first steelhead will be hitting the tribs. With the cool summer and good water levels it's a good bet that the exploratory fall runs may be early this year. There has been one confirmed report of a steelhead caught off the wall at Walnut Creek on July 29th. Night fishing along the North end of the Walnut creek channel may be worth a try over the next week or so if the night time temperatures remain cool. Early runs often mean big Browns as well. Maintenance workers at the Walnut Creek Access area have reported a number of steelhead "porpoising" near shore in the early morning hours.

Just a reminder that anglers fishing the wall at Walnut Creek are required by regulation to remove their lines for boats entering and exiting the channel to avoid prop tangling.

Pennsylvania Steelhead Association Meeting:
The PA. Steelhead Association will be kicking off the season with its first meeting of the season on Wednesday evening, August 11th at 7:00. Meetings are held at the Elk Creek Inn on Sterrettania Road and as always the public is welcome. This is always a sure sign that Steelhead season is just around the corner. The speaker for the evening will be DWCO Michael McSkimming, PHD. will appropriately be giving a presentation on Angling Ethics.

Also on the agenda will be details regarding the club's annual Big Run Banquet. The annual event features a pig roast, dogs, and all the fixings along with beer and soft drinks. Raffles, games and door prizes are nearly endless. Fly tying, casting, and sac tying demonstrations round out a day of fun for all and benefit a hard working club dedicated to our steelhead fishery.

Important Note from WCO Tom Edwards, Central Erie County:
The West Pier Boat launch at Presque Isle State Park will be closed for renovations beginning August 16th. Upgrades will last approximately 4 to 6 weeks and will include extending the length of the ramps. These are the popular public launch ramps located in Marina Bay just East of the Park Marina. Boaters are temporarily advised to launch at the Lagoon Launch (adjacent to the boat and canoe rentals) or other areas on Presque Isle or consider launching at the Lampe or Chestnut Street launches on the South side of Presque Isle Bay. This note is especially important for boaters wanting to access the Bay during the Fireworks display the last night of Celebrate Erie. We will advise as soon as possible as to anticipated reopening of this launch facility.

So Long Brian:
Deputy Waterways Conservation Officer Bryan Brendley, Central Erie County, will be leaving his current post at Gannon University to pursue advancements in his full time teaching career in North Carolina Dr. Brendley has been on board as a DWCO for only 2 years or so but has made a lasting mark with his fellow officers. His dedication and commitment to the Commission and the Bureau of Law Enforcement, along with his colorful sense of humor and keen wit, place him in high admiration with his peers and friends. We will miss you Bryan and hope that you will come back to visit often. Best wishes from all the Erie area officers.
