It was just an OK week here at Port Clinton, not much to write home about. After losing Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday due to almost gale force winds and cold, we went right into summer like weather. Although it could have hurt us worst, the blow didn’t affect things nearly as bad as I thought it might. On Tuesday we had wind chills that registered around 15 degrees. Over the weekend we had air temperatures that hovered in the low 80’s. Go figure, only in Ohio.

The trollers are starting to do a few fish everyday north of the reef complex in the area known as the flats. Best action has been between “B” and “C” cans. The successful trollers were picking off fish very high. We tried some trolling on an afternoon trip and didn’t catch anything; such is spring fishing in Port Clinton. We were able to salvage things by jigging up a couple handfuls of fish closer to shore on the “beach” just N.W. of Port Clinton.

Water temperatures have gone nowhere with the water off of Toledo and Port Clinton holding around 45°. Even though water temperatures are reluctant to climb, a lot of incidental fish are starting to turn on. We did a fair share of Smallmouth Bass this past week whenever we could get out, though you can’t keep them until the end of June this year. We are also seeing a fair amount of big yellow Perch starting to turn on along with a few Sheephead, which means the “cold water” period is starting to wind down.

I hope to drag some crawler harnesses in the coming days in hopes of picking up a few really big post spawn females. Most of the fish that have been caught in the last few days are still being caught vertical jigging. Things are going to change fast now, stay tuned.

Capt. Walt
