COLUMBUS, OH -- Images captured by residents of Harrison, Stark,
Erie, Columbiana and Van Wert counties topped nearly 100 entries to win Ohio
State Parks' Bicentennial Photo Contest, according to the Ohio Department of
Natural Resources (ODNR). Winning photos are currently posted on the ODNR
website at ohiodnr.com and will appear this fall in the Bicentennial issue
of the Ohio State Parks magazine.
Maple Woods of Hopedale in Harrison County took first place in the
"Heritage Events" category with a nostalgic photograph of a lockkeeper
working on the Muskingum River Parkway in Morgan County. Steve Korba of
Canton placed second in the same category, with an image from Spring Plowing
Days at Malabar Farm State Park in Richland County. Nine-year-old Ryan
Martin of Wellsville in Columbiana County won the category's youth
competition with his photo of a pioneer blacksmith re-enactor working at
nearby Beaver Creek State Park.
Honorable mention in the "Heritage Events" category went to Marcia
Cadle of Mansfield (Apple Butter Festival at Mt. Gilead State Park in Morrow
County) and Rosie Faulds of Galion (Ohio Heritage Days at Malabar Farm State
Park).
Marblehead Lighthouse reflected in the window of the nearby Keepers'
House at Marblehead Lighthouse State Park in Ottawa County took top honors
in the "Historic Structures" category. Arnold Ehrsam of Sandusky snapped the
photo. Second place in the category went to Steven Fought of Delphos in Van
Wert County with an image of Hope Furnace at Lake Hope State Park in Vinton
County. Another picture of Marblehead Lighthouse earned first place in the
category's youth competition for Kaitlin Thrasher, 8, also of Wellsville.
Honorable mention in the "Historic Structures" category went to Mike
Arabia of Steubenville (Kennedy Stone House at Salt Fork State Park in
Guernsey County), Douglas Bacso of Cleveland (Sandy & Beaver Canal at Beaver
Creek State Park), Rita Hoherman Virgili of Polk in Ashland County (Grist
Mill at Mohican State Park in Ashland County), Veronica Pearce of Elmore in
Ottawa County (Keepers' House at Marblehead Lighthouse State Park), Robert
Comer of Trotwood in Montgomery County (Pioneer Village at Caesar Creek
State Park in Warren County) and Eleanor Jakubowski of Cleveland (Cabins at
Beaver Creek State Park).
ODNR announced the competition last fall. Entrants were encouraged
to capture the rich diversity of Ohio's history as it is demonstrated in the
state park system.
