Lake Erie Fishing Report: May 7, 2003

Warming surface temperatures and improved water clarity have led to better
walleye fishing. Best areas have included from north of Kelley's Island to
North Bass Island, southwest of Kelley's Island and the reef complex. In
open water areas the best methods have been drifting or trolling worm
harnesses and trolling crankbaits. On the reef complex purple or blue jigs
tipped with shiners have been productive. Most walleye caught have ranged
from 19" to 30". The walleye limit on Ohio waters of Lake Erie increased to
6 fish per angler as of May 1.
Yellow perch fishing has continued to be productive between Marblehead and
Kelley's Island. Limits of 9" to 13" perch are being caught using spreaders
with live shiners as bait.
Smallmouth bass fishing continues to improve around the Bass Island area.
The southeast corner of Kelley's Island has been the best location, with
many fish over 15" being caught in 8' to 20' of water on tube jigs.
